Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: a natural way to treat ADHD Feature

Does your child have poor concentration and an inability to relax? Has your child been diagnosed with ADHD? Are you caring for or teaching children with these problems? As an individual who cares for a child, you will be wanting to do your best for that child and help him or her reach their full potential, but sometimes a child's behaviour seems to thwart all your best endeavours. Constant fidgeting, restlessness, failure to pay attention and heedlessness of others can be both exhausting and dispiriting, especially when you know this hides a young person who is intelligent and creative if only you could engage with them. Many children with these problems are diagnosed as having Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and are prescribed powerful drugs that help to control (but not cure) the worst of the symptoms, but for which the long-term consequences are unknown. In Professor Basant Puri's groundbreaking new book you will discover a very different way of looking at ADHD. His starting point is the basis of behaviour in the chemistry of the brain and the many factors which influence this. By understanding behaviour at this level it is possible to see how hyperactivity can be reduced and concentration improved in a natural way that is in tune with the needs of the individual. He presents the results of two major new studies, with which he has been involved, that demonstrate the effectiveness of a completely natural way to treat ADHD. Contents 1. A breakthrough 2. What is ADHD? 3. Why does ADHD occur? 4. How can fatty acids help? 5. Stimulant medication versus fatty acids 6. Treating ADHD with fatty acids 7. Everyone can benefit from fatty acids 8. The journey to recovery

Finely Dispersed Particles: Micro-, Nano-, and Atto-Engineering (Surfactant Science) Feature

Over the last decade, the biggest advances in physical chemistry have come from thinking smaller. The leading edge in research pushes closer to the atomic frontier with every passing year. Collecting the latest developments in the science and engineering of finely dispersed particles and related systems, Finely Dispersed Particles: Micro-, Nano-, and Atto-Engineering explores heat, mass, momentum and electron transfer phenomena of well-characterized interfaces at the milli-, micro-, nano-, and atto-scales.

An interdisciplinary team of leading experts from around the world discuss recent concepts in the physics and chemistry of various well-studied interfaces of rigid and deformable particles in homo- and hetero-aggregate dispersed systems, including emulsions, dispersoids, foams, fluosols, polymer membranes, and biocolloids. The contributors clearly elucidate the hydrodynamic, electrodynamic, and thermodynamic instabilities that occur at interfaces, as well as the rheological properties of interfacial layers responsible for droplets, particles, and droplet-particle-film structures in finely dispersed systems. The book examines structure and dynamics from various angles, such as relativistic and non-relativistic theories, molecular orbital methods, and transient state theories.

With a comprehensive survey of our current understanding, Finely Dispersed Particles: Micro-, Nano-, and Atto-Engineering provides a solid platform for further exploration and discovery at increasingly smaller scales.

Nanotoxicity: From In Vivo and In Vitro Models to Health Risks Feature

Nanomaterials - substances smaller than 100 nanometers in size - have been added in recent years to an increasing numbers of consumer products used in day-to-day life; in food packaging, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, odor-resistant textiles and household appliances. The extensive application of nanomaterials in a wide range of products for human use poses a potential for toxicity risk to human health and the environment. Such adverse effects of nanomaterials on human health have triggered the development of a new scientific discipline known as “nanotoxicity” – the study of the toxicity of nanomaterials.

Nanotoxicity: From in vivo and in vitro Models to Health Risks provides up-to-date state-of-the-art information presented by recognized experts in this emerging new field in toxicology. It discusses the safety evaluation of nanomaterials in foods, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics and other regulated products and its use in risk analysis for potential regulatory use. Topics covered include:

  • biomarkers for nanotoxicity assessment
  • nanotoxicity assessment by gene expression analysis
  • in vivo and in vitro models for nanotoxicity testing
  • mechanisms of nanotoxicity
  • pharmakokinetics of nanomaterials
  • nanotoxicity of foods including food processing, food packaging and food safety
  • nanotoxicity of drugs including drug development and drug delivery
  • nanotoxicity of cosmetics and consumer products
  • health and environmental impact of nanotoxicity
  • safety evaluation of nanomaterials
  • regulatory impact of nanomaterials

Nanotoxicity: From in vivo and in vitro Models to Health Risks is a valuable authoritative source of information for readers from a wide range of disciplines such as toxicology, pharmacology, drug toxicity and food and environmental sciences. The book will be useful to the research community in academia, industry, hospitals and government, as well as to government regulators and risk assessors of foods, drugs and environmental and agricultural products.

Nanostructured Coatings (Nanostructure Science and Technology) Feature

This book delivers practical insight into a broad range of fields related to hard coatings, from their deposition and characterization up to the hardening and deformation mechanisms allowing the interpretation of results. The text examines relationships between structure/microstructure and mechanical properties from fundamental concepts, through types of coatings, to characterization techniques. The authors explore the search for coatings that can satisfy the criteria for successful implementation in real mechanical applications.

Impinging Streams: Fundamentals, Properties and Applications

Impinging Streams: Fundamentals, Properties and Applications Review

Impinging Streams: Fundamentals, Properties and Applications Feature

The original idea of IS is to send two solid-gas streams to impinge against each other at high velocity, enhancing transfer between phases. IS is classified into two kinds: Gas-continuous impinging streams (GIS) and Liquid-continuous ones (LIS). Impinging Streams describes fundamentals, major properties and application of IS, as a category of novel technologies in chemical engineering. Because of the universality of transfer phenomena, it is receiving widespread attention. This book represents the first book in this area for over 10 years and covers achievements and technologies.

* describing clearly the properties of Gas-continuous and Liquid-continuous impinging streams
* introducing new technical devices
* includes a number of worked application cases, which are illustrated in detail

The Selected Plays of Ben Jonson: Volume 1: Sejanus, Volpone, Epicoene or the Silent Woman (Plays by Renaissance and Restoration Dramatists) Feature

This volume contains three of Ben Jonson's greatest plays - Sejanus (1603), Volpone (1606) and Epicoene, or The Silent Woman (1609). Sejanus, an experimental tragedy written in the classical manner, was labelled a seditious work at the time of its first production and embroiled Jonson with the Privy Council. Volpone is the first of his mature comedies, with a remarkable cast of Venetian legacy-hunters: using verse of mock-heroic grandeur Jonson created in the character of Volpone one of his most flamboyant and cynical swindlers. Epicoene is a brilliant farce which makes fun of the pretensions of the courtiers, wits and bluestockings of contemporary London. Jonson was unique in his own time for the close personal supervision he gave to the publication of his plays. As a result, the early published texts of the plays in this volume carry an unusually high degree of authorial intention. In preparing this modernised edition an attempt has been made to conserve something of the author's highly individual treatment of names, verb forms and punctuation.
